Editor: Dark skin theme in Free available in options.

It seems petty not to include the dark skin theme in Unity Free. Better would be to have it not as default. Migraine sufferers like myself would appreciate the option of having the darker look sometimes.

Well It is actually a lot better with the dark theme hack, but I think it is not enough. Font colors should be white and crisp in order to avoid eye strain. Working several hours with the editor will be very difficult and will increase eye fatigue. I've tried the Unreal editor and if you put them side to side you will see what I'm talking about. It also have gray background but the the font is crisp, bright and it is easy to read. For a guy like me - with eye problems - this is essential. If not the theme - at least they should give us an option to control the font size and color.

For anyone looking for a way to get the DARK UI without having to buy/ crack premium or plus etc. Open the Unity.exe file in a hex editor (HxD is free and works great for this), search for:

    84 C0 75 08 33 C0 48 83 C4 20 5B C3 8B 03 48 83 C4 20 5B C3

    and then replace it with:

    84 C0 74 08 33 C0 48 83 C4 20 5B C3 8B 03 48 83 C4 20 5B C3

Unity will use the dark theme instead of light theme. (works in unity Version 5.6.1f1)

For previous versions search the following (I guarantee 5.4.2f2, though it should work with earlier versions than that as long as the hex values are still present when you search for them):

    1B 00 84 C0 75 08

    replace with:

    1B 00 84 C0 74 08

I hope this helps anyone else with this stupid lack of a feature. I originally discovered these hex values on this forum here:

It is not the dark theme I want from Unity, I wish for a theme which doesn't heart my eyes. The current one with gray background gives me eye strain, because I have a medical condition. So when I start as full time indie game developer, if I switch to Unreal engine, this will be the MAIN reason. And again even white background with black characters, will be sufficient. Or at least give us an option to make the font bigger.

People stop wasting your votes on this.

It's been 6 years since this pettition was posted.

It's the most voted pettition ever... it has almost 3 times the votes of the second most voted.

Unity Knows... they Know we all want this.... they just don't care.

I see a few guys saying "comfortable UI color". I don't think that's being iterated enough.

UI color is not a "feature". It's a comfort thing. When I buy a chair, even if it's one of the only 3 or 4 chairs I can afford, I'm going to buy the most comfortable chair. The same thing is true for software.

I've developed in Unity for a year now while learning, and, for the most part, the UI color hasn't bothered me. Of late, however, I've noticed a sort of uncomfortable feeling when I open the software. It bothers my eyes, and it's to the point that I don't even want to open it any more.

At the same time, I've been using Visual Studio for the same amount of time. I've had the dark theme on it from the start. I love opening it. It feels good to my eyes.

I know you guys have handed me a lot for free already, and I appreciate that. It is my goal to make money developing games, and in turn, you will make money on my development. On that same token, I need to know that greed doesn't overpower common sense in your team. I'll go on to make money developing games one way or another, but whether or not you make money off those games in the future is strictly dependent on your reaction to issues like this.

I try my best to be as fair as possible, and I always try to contribute where I can for free software that does a lot of work for me. That said, I find it hard to contribute when something like this is being held hostage at a price point of $125 a month.

I'm sure some, if not most, among you are married. You may be making more than I am, but take yourself back to a place where you had to justify $125 a month to your wife and tell me there's any chance of me buying Pro before I make any money off the platform.

Ultimately, holding a feature hostage that does nothing more but lessen the strain that is placed on my eyes after hours of use is a tactic that I simply cannot get behind. I'd rather pay the $20 for the C++ UE4 engine course on Udemy because it comes stock with contrast options.

    Unity Team,

I doubt users are going to upgrade to Pro for the soul purpose of getting the Dark Theme. The monetization strategy of Unity Plus/Pro is clear, and users who have a better experience with Unity Personal are more likely to become Plus / Pro users!!! In many ways, this looks like a money grab, but I doubt there has been a single person to upgrade away from Personal solely because of the dark theme. Please consider making it an option in the settings for all editions!

This is a health issue and should not be a matter of marketing. People with neurological diseases should not be discriminated against. Look up Photophobia.

I'm very surprised and disappointed that Unity doesn't have a stock dark UI skin. I mean, why wouldn't it have something so basic available to personal users? It just seems so absurd.
