Dedicated Unity blog about Terrain Core Update

Terrain

-

-

In 2013, somebody posted the idea "Improved Unity terrain core engine" so that it would be possible that Unity developers could create as great environments as UE developers could.

The idea got 1984 votes, and was accepted by Unity 4 years ago.
Since then it has the status "Planned".

Since then there's absolutely no update, no mention of an update or anything else.

Unity just keeps quiet about this since 4 years.

I know of several experienced people who still don't know if their game will be released with Unity or UE.

This is nerve-wrecking.

I'm therefore pleading for an official Unity blog where we users finally get insights about what is planned and when it will approximately be available to us.

Because currently we can only hope that something is being worked on.
At first I thought hoping was enough, but after 4 years of waiting I think I'd need some proof.

This shouldn't be an "idea", if you know what I mean.
Those features should be within the engine maybe since day 1.
    >>>I want to paint or even sculpt multiple terrains at once seamlessly.<<<

    I don't care about assets.
Don't tell me that I have to use an asset for each situation because I'm gonna puke! hahaha
In my opinion everything you put in your game has to be made by your own hand.
Unless you're a hobbyst or you just use asset tools to improve develop time.
But editing multiple terrains? That should be within Unity by default.
    Let me tell you.

UE for example has that multiple terrain editing thing by default and also it's free.
The reason why I still prefer Unity is because its simplicity... But come on guys, don't be too simplistic! Update it!

Come on guys this is ridiculous, over 4 years and this still is in the research phase. Your terrain tools are on 2000's level. Which is really bad as the terrain engine is simply aged terribly. Unable to place holes in terrain, no native advanced PBR Shader with anything over normal map support, no paths / road tools, clunky / broken (doesn't work nearly as expected) tools. I do not want to spend money on a feature that every other game engine has natively. This leads me to think its time that we got a new terrain system. This is literally the only thing that i actively want updated in unity. Everything else is golden for now!

Yeah unity needs to update that its been years. Unity is doing so good in the post processing side, its just the terrain engine thats holding back a really good level design.

I just want to know how to go on. We're at the stage of environment. And still don't know whether to use the current terrain hoping that the terrain update will be compatible with the old terrain or if we should use UE or a ThirdParty solution in Unity.
It's really difficult without hearing from Unity.

Perhaps Unity is waiting for https://www.awesometech.no/ to be finished, and then they hire him to do the terrain update. Like NGUI and UI where Unity hired the NGUI publisher to create the new UI.

3rd party asset makers can create custom solutions which are faster than the current system but to get really good speeds like UE4, Unity needs to tackle the core engine which is C++ and not C# like 3rd party solutions.

Sadly, third-party developers might be working alone for a long time. That means that eventually, many of the asset store terrain solutions might not work for an eventual brand new terrain system. I think that Unity has delayed this too much.

Knowing what exactely is stopping Unity from updating the terrain core engine since so many years might help asset publishers figuring out where exactely they could jump in. Therefore such a blog seems like a great idea.

I don't see any way of making decent semi-open open world projects in Unity right now, even with assets from publishers. They're just not fast enough because Unity just isn't equipped for that yet.
I love Unity, but currently I still have to use UE4 to make that happen.
I wish Unity would keep us updated.

I want to switch from UE to Unity but terrains are handled better in UE (while many other things are handled better in Unity).
I don't quite understand why Unity doesn't give this a high priority and why there's no updates or a comment about it. Surely people can use 3rd party assets to work around lacking features but if Unity doesn't change the core engine we'll not be able to get maximum speed / quality. I guess Unity needs to change very much under the hood. I would also like a blog where they talk about what's going on so that I'm not left in the dark, and I can faithfully use Unity instead of thinking if I'll release with Unity or UE.
